Are
we alone in the universe? Is there life on another planet? If so, how would
they travel the vast distances to get to our planet? In 1989, an interview with
an unknown person, who identified himself as “Dennis”, sparked a sudden
interest in a facility located deep in the Nevada desert. During the interview,
“Dennis” stated he was a physicist that was part of a top secret group working
on reverse engineering of the propulsion system of an alien spacecraft. Dennis
will later admit that his true identity is Robert “Bob” Lazar. There are a
several conspiracy theories about Bob Lazar:
1. Did
he really see and work on an alien spacecraft?
2. Did
he create the story to receive fame and attention?
3. Did
the government set him up to take the attention off of what is really happening
at Area 51?
Let’s
look into the life of Bob Lazar and the conspiracies that surround him, and try
to figure out if what he says is true.
Character
Analysis
Who is Robert “Bob” Lazar? He was
born on January 26, 1959, in Coral Gables, Florida, to Albert Lazar and Phyllis
Berliner. His friends describe as a well-educated, truthful individual, who has
a physics degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and an
electronics degree from California Institute of Technology.
Bob Lazar is also well known as an
ex-government employee, who worked at a top secret site south of Area 51, named
S-4. Mr. Lazar claims he was a physicist contracted by the government to
reverse engineer the propulsion system of an alien spacecraft (Bob Lazar Explains
Alien Craft Propulsion is by Warping Gravity). Before working for the
government, Mr. Lazar experimented with different mechanical and propulsion
systems. He designed and fabricated a jet powered bicycle and a jet powered
car, capable of reaching 200 miles per hour (England). Mr. Lazar owned and
operated a photo processing lab from his house before and during his employment
with the government (Huff).
During the late 1980’s, two of Bob Lazar’s
closest friends were Gene Huff and John Lear.
Mr. Huff describes Mr. Lazar as “a very secretive person who judges only
a very small group of people to be worthy of responses regarding his personal
dealings and personal life” (Huff). Mr. Lear describes Mr. Lazar as “a highly
educated and truthful person” (Area 51 Worker Bob Lazar Interview + John Lear
Vintage). A friend and a co-worker of Mr. Lazar, who wished his name not be
publicly disclosed, described him as “not a stupid person. He’s very
intelligent, clever and kind of a con man. He always had something going, but
he was very intelligent” (Farmer).
Why would an acquaintance of Bob Lazar
describe him as an intelligent, truthful person while others considered him a
dishonest con-artist? To answer this question, we need to look into Bob Lazar’s
past and explore some of his internal conflicts. Mr. Lazar either was not very good at
managing his debts or he never planned on repaying them. He borrowed $19,000
from his parents, and only repaid them $1,500 (Mahood). He purchased a Corvette
for $19,000, only repaid $550, and the car was later repossessed (1). Mr. Lazar
borrowed $60,000 from the Los Alamos National Bank and only repaid $1,300 (1).
Furthermore, Mr. Lazar had an issue with fame. After building his jet propelled
Honda, a local newspaper wrote an article featuring him and his car. He also
craved the attention that owning a sports car would bring. Nevertheless, it is
a problem when you cannot afford the steep price tag and are living above your
means.
Additionally, Bob Lazar faced some
external conflicts such as his friends who pushed him to go public about the
UFOs. During the 1980’s, the United States Air Force was testing new aviation
technology at Area 51. Strange aircraft that no one had ever seen before, took
to the skies, sparking an increased amount of unidentified flying object (UFO)
sightings (Top CIA Secrets of Area 51 Real Truth Behind – Full
Documentary). During this time frame,
John Lear, who later became Mr. Lazar’s friend, started coming forward with
some startling comments concerning the subject of UFOs and aliens (Lear). Gene
Huff and John Lear were friends when Mr. Huff introduced Bob Lazar to Mr. Lear.
Another ingredient to this extraterrestrial mix was George Knapp. He was and
still is a news anchor for a Las Vegas television station. Mr. Knapp was very interested in the activity
at Area 51 and the numerous UFO sightings and was the reporter who broke Bob
Lazar’s story of S-4 and the alien spacecraft in 1989 (Knapp).
Conspiracy
Descriptions (Main Idea and Details with
Survey Results)
In the mysterious case of Bob Lazar, three
conspiracies theories were discussed.
One questioned if Mr. Lazar actually worked for the government. The
second questioned if Mr. Lazar and his friends constructed the story for the
fame. And finally, the third questioned if Mr. Lazar was set up by the
government to hide the top secret activities that took place at Area 51.
In the first theory, Bob Lazar was
hired by the government to reverse engineer an alien spacecraft. Mr. Lazar
stated he worked for Los Alamos National Laboratory when he met Dr. Edward
Teller, “the father of the hydrogen bomb”, and used him to obtain a job at the
secret government site know as Site Four (S-4) (Friedman). Mr. Lazar made
claims that he attended school at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and
California Institute of Technology, earning master degrees at both. Mr. Lazar
has failed to present proof of these degrees or proof that he actually attended
either school. As for proof if he worked for the government, Mr. Lazar has
provided proof in the form of W-2 form and government identification with
United States Department of Naval Intelligence. Both could have been
counterfeited by Mr. Lazar due to the fact he owned and operated a photo
processing lab from his home.
In the second theory, it is believed
that Mr. Lazar and his friends, Gene Huff and John Lear, created an elaborate
story to create fame and attention. With
the help of a local news anchor, George Knapp, Mr. Lazar explained a bizarre
story of government deception, cover-ups, and engineering wonders. Shortly
after the story aired, it became a worldwide sensation. Since the release of
the of the original story, Mr. Huff, Mr. Lazar, and Mr. Lear have appeared in
numerous interviews and documentaries telling their story of the infamous Area
51.
In the third theory, people believe
Mr. Lazar actually worked at a government site and was made to believe he was
working on an alien spacecraft, knowing he would leak the information, covering
up the true purpose of the top secret site. Mr. Lazar, on several occasions,
tells a story of reading classified documents, and attending several briefings
explaining what was happening at the site (UFO The Bob Lazar Interview (Full
Documentary). Mr. Lazar states personnel
at the site told him stories of aliens, their origin, and different incidents
that took place there in the past (1). He explains on his first two visits to
the site, the hanger doors were always closed, but on the third day, one of the
doors was opened revealing an unusual aircraft (1).
Area 51 was, and possibility still
is, a top secret aviation test site where the Central Intelligence Agency and
United States military tested spy planes and the latest in aviation technology.
For decades, the U. S. government has denied the existence of Area 51 and
stayed the course until 2013, when documents were declassified (Richelson).
During the 1980s, a new technology, stealth, was being tested on aircraft at
the site (Top CIA Secrets of Area 51 Real Truth Behind – Full Documentary). It
was during this time frame that Mr. Lazar claims he worked for the government.
When asked for an interview on the twenty fifth anniversary of the original
interview, a contact from United Nuclear, a company started by Mr. Lazar,
replied “his companies are involved in several military contracts and he is a
science and technology consultant to Raytheon weapons systems” (Rojas). It
would be ironic for the military to award a contract to someone who is believed
to be a whistleblower of top secret activity. And you would have to be a very
trustworthy person to be a consultant for the company Raytheon, a major U. S
defense contractor. Therefore, it is possible that Bob Lazar was lying about
what he witnessed. Lastly, on October
24, 2016, twenty randomly selected students from College of the Mainland Campus
in Texas City, TX were asked if they believed the government had aliens at Area
51. Surprisingly, fifty percent believed there are aliens at Area 51.
Conclusion
In
1989, Bob Lazar informed many people around the world about secrets the United
States government was hiding from its citizens. The result of his story led to
three conspiracy theories:
1. Did
he really see and work on an alien spacecraft?
2. Did
he create the story to receive fame and attention?
3. Did
the government set him up to take the attention off of what is really happening
at Area 51?
Although, it is most likely that he and
his friends created the story for the fame and attention they received, it is
possible the United States government helped generate the story to cover up the
top secret activities taken place at Area 51.
